Travel Blog: From McKinleyville to Orick

Hello, readers! I probably should have updated this sooner, but better late than never.

On September 16th, I accidentally broke the breathy-tube for my inhaler. It's now just the medicine and the little pump-tube, and since I intake the medicine much sooner, I have to be very careful about dosage or I'll be tripping balls and I don't actually like being high.

In McKinleyville, people were very kind and helpful. They gave me food, tea, tissues, and well-wishes when they saw that I was sick, rather than be annoyed at my constant coughing. I had recurring, almost non-stop coughing fits that made it impossible to get to sleep and it turned out that honey (the useless Eureka doctor's recommendation) triggered coughing fits due to the sugars. I took loads of pain pills to deal with the swelling in my throat and was almost constantly exhausted. My body hurt a lot from the coughing fits, too. Because of my fever and exhaustion, I got frustrated with Loki for wanting to keep going instead of just settling somewhere where I could rest until I stopped being sick (lol).

On September 18th, we walked through suburban McKinleyville to another town, where we slept by an electrical box across from the Holiday Inn. One guy was curious about our travels and, though he wouldn't let us tag along with him, he did give us $20 for food and medicine. By that point, I woke up coughing and screaming in pain from it, and Loki took the money to the hotel to buy me a few pill packs. He got me Tylenol, Bayer, and Nyquil; and on our way out, when we refilled our water (for free, thank goodness), I grabbed a banana and some tea to keep my energy up.

We took a trail to a beach. I found out that I like Dal Makhana (which hopefully I'm spelling correctly), a sweet, mild Indian curry. Near mid-afternoon, we got a ride from an eccentric woman, whom I'll refer to as Meaghan Lite, who was travelling with a quieter, more level-headed friend.

Meaghan Lite was pretty talkative and very energy-focused, but for someone that focused on positive energy, she had a bit of anxiety about small things (like me adding honey to broth to soften the flavour of garlic and onions, for instance). Loki described her presence as "energy-draining", and it wasn't really easy to finish a thought with her, but she was kind-hearted and she gave us lots of food. She made me soup and salad to help with my illness.

I tried to go down to the beach to relax a few times, but I kept breaking out in coughing fits. This kept happening even after we tried to go to bed, and whenever Meaghan Lite knocked on the door and tried to talk to us, it got especially bad. I don't think it was so much her anymore, though; I was actually pretty much allergic to everyone's energy and couldn't settle down and get to sleep until everyone else in the park had gone. I didn't actually get to sleep until after even Loki was asleep, but then I was out like a light.

Oh yes, for reference, dal makhani is great for coughs.

The next morning, September 19th, we acquired a LOT of Gatorade. A woman gave it to Loki and he poured most of it into our empty water jug. I insisted on keeping the purple ones for myself, so he just poured in the blue ones, which worked perfectly since the purple ones wouldn't have fit anyway.
