From the Slabs to Outside: Makayla, 2.18.15

FEBRUARY 18, 2015
11.54 AM

MAKAYLA
Hey. I'm worried about you hun haven't heard from you hope your ok

FEBRUARY 19, 2015
11.30 AM

ME
Phone is now charged. There's only one area with a power source.

MAKAYLA
Oh well is everything ok
I have worried

ME
Yeah, except my period started and it really hurts.

MAKAYLA
Awww I'm sorry
Have you tried a heat pad

ME
With no power supply.

MAKAYLA
Oh
Hot water bottle

ME
...
I am living in a tent.
In the middle of nowhere

MAKAYLA
What

ME
The best I can do is packeted ibuprofen I took from school and forgot about
Basically, we don't have much in the way of modern convenience. No power supply, no microwave, nothing that could heat a water bottle.

MAKAYLA
Where are you

ME
Many hours outside town.
We live in a sort of community like this. Closer to nature, closer to God.

MAKAYLA
 You have lost your marbles
It's not worth it

ME
No, this is exactly where I'm meant to be. The tent is just temporary XD
He's building us a home. We just didn't want to live in the city with everyone regulating our every move and cops patrolling everywhere all the time trying to profile him.
Our new home will take a while to complete, but he says we'll have our own power supply there. Until then, you might only hear from me every few days or so.

MAKAYLA
But
That's not safe

ME, 12.04 PM
It's perfectly safe. Many people live here and they're generally very kind.

MAKAYLA
You live away from power! That's not legit

ME
No, see, our tent doesn't have power. There's a nearby home that does and it's open to everyone in the area.

MAKAYLA
Well....still not legit

ME
It's perfectly legit. Ever seen a power outlet in a tent?

MAKAYLA
No
I know that
But

ME
Well, when Loki finishes building our house, our house will have a power supply.

MAKAYLA
When's that

ME
Why does it matter so hard? We have fire to cook with, tools to build with, and books to entertain ourselves with.
And pen & paper to write with.

MAKAYLA
Sweetie

ME
I knew about all of this before I came.

MAKAYLA
But why

ME
Because it's peaceful. Building our own home, not living off my parents, making everything we need with our own four hands and the help of our friends and neighbours-- there's dignity in that.
It feels better. It feels less stressful than competing against hundreds of people for a job I don't even want to pay bills for things we could create ourselves.
We eat very well, bathe every day, have moist towelettes as a bonus, no one bothers us, and the only challenge with sleeping so far is figuring out how many clothes will keep us warm in the early morning when we wake up without overheating us before we go to bed
